The Spanish national football competition La Liga has failed to find buyers for five out of the nine TV rights packages - including free-to-air (FTA) and video-on-demand (VOD) - two months before kick-off.
la liga adelanteAfter closing million pound agreements with Mediapro and Telefónica, La Liga wasn’t expecting that the majority of its TV rights would remain unsold at this point. Therefore, the Spanish football organisation has modified the conditions and opened a new bidding process, the terms of which are available online.
The remaining packages include one free-to-air (FTA) match of the first division and FTA recaps and highlights, both of which were owned last year by RTVE. This time, it looks like the Spanish public broadcaster won’t enter the bid due its financial troubles.
In addition, the Copa del Rey games (excluding the final), the second division package and La Liga VOD rights haven’t managed to find a buyer.
The 2016/2017 to 2018/2019 seasons are the first in which TV rights have been collectively negotiated in a bid to increase profits and allow for fairer sharing among football clubs.
La Liga sold its first broadcasting rights quickly, with Telefónica aiming to gain exclusivity and paying €2.4 billion for pay-TV rights for the three seasons.
