La Liga has revealed the results of the bids for its broadcasting rights, with only Telefónica and Mediapro-beIN Sports having paid €2.65 billion for the next three seasons.
The new model for distributing broadcasting rights seems to have therefore met its initial goal: to generate more income for football teams. With two out of the nine TV rights packages, La Liga will dole out over €1.7 billion to clubs.
Telefónica's Movistar+ has gained the exclusive rights to broadcast the most important match of each week, including one El Clasico, and has paid €750 million for the privilege.
Mediapro, which manages beIN Sports in Spain, has paid €1.9 billion for the largest rights package, which includes eight games per week, with one match always featuring Real Madrid or Barcelona.
“We're highly satisfied for getting the rights of a very important football competition like La Liga, something that strengthens the group's international strategy,” said Nasser al-Khelaifi, president of beIN Sports Media.
For the moment, most of La Liga will remain as a premium content for pay-TV channels, as the other seven rights packages - including those reserved for free-to-air TV - haven't been awarded.
La Liga's management board intends to resolve this in a meeting scheduled to take place before the end of the year.
