Sky takes stake in Sugar Films
Pay-TV giant Sky has got its substantial wallet out again and has taken a minority stake in Sugar Films, an independent production company founded by senior television professionals.
Former Discovery Networks International president and CEO Mark Hollinger will also take a stake and will become chairman of the company founded in 2015 by Kwadjo Dajan, Narinder Minhas, Lucy Pilkington, Nav Raman and former BBC chief creative officer Pat Younge.
Sugar Films aims to produce bold, popular and provocative television and digital content for mainstream and diverse audiences. It has already secured a number of commissions including a digital shorts series with Channel Four and a documentary for BBC2. Sky and Hollinger say they will support the co-founders of Sugar Films in the creation and delivery of scripted and non-scripted projects, both in the UK and internationally.
Sky’s international production and distribution business, Sky Vision, will become Sugar Films’ exclusive distribution partner, and will represent all new programmes and formats. The pay-TV company’s Sky Vision production arm has a growing portfolio, and it has equity stakes in a number of independent production companies such as Love Productions, Blast! Films, Jupiter Entertainment, Znak & Jones and Talos Films.
“Sugar Films is a dynamic production company with a mix of experienced executives and cutting-edge creative talent,” commented Sky Vision managing director Jane Millichip. “In a short space of time, they have built an impressive development slate of both scripted and non-scripted shows. We’re really excited to be working with them to build the business both in the UK and internationally.”
