Disney Maker Studios inks deal for 9Now Jobsworth-min

Jobsworth minAustralia’s Nine Entertainment is set to stream five original series from Maker Studios on its video-on-demand (VOD) platform 9Now, following a deal with the Disney subsidiary.

The shows – Jobsworth, Now Boarding, Wreck Room, Pretty Vacant, and Hope & Randy – will be aimed at a millennial audience as part of 9Now’s Short Not Sweet advertising supported VOD service.

The shows feature 20-year-old YouTube sensation Joe Weller in Jobsworth, YouTube star Nikki Limo in Wreck Room, and skateboarders and social media favourites Chris Chann, Micky Papa and Jason Park in Now Boarding.

“We firmly believe our relationship with Maker Studios will add new audiences to the 9Now platform, which already has more than 1.7m subscribers, and we are really excited to be an exclusive home for the premiere of Jobsworth, starring Joe Weller,” said Niamh Collins, general manager of product and digital operations, Nine Entertainment.

The deal represents the first digital only content to be carried by 9Now, which has so far been offering a catch-up function for Nine’s TV shows.

Maker Studios boasts ten billion views every month on YouTube, where over 950 million subscribers seek its youth-skewed short form content. Its network includes more than 50,000 independent creators from more than 100 countries.

Nick Higgins, general manager of Maker Studios Australia and New Zealand, said: “We continue to look for distribution platforms that value our voice in short form and look forward to exposing these original shows to new audiences.”
