Clinical South Africa make it 2-0

While India's bowling performance was a lot better during the second ODI, their batting woes continued as they suffered their second loss on the trot to lose the ODI series against South Africa. Put in to bat, the hosts were given a superb start by Quinton de Kock (106) and Hashim Amla (100) before they lost quick wickets in the death overs to end up with a total of 280/6. In reply, the visitors struggled against the pacers yet again and were skittled out for just 146. Lonwabo Tsotsobe was the star performer with the ball, picking up 4/25 while Dale Steyn (3/17) and Morne Morkel (2/34) also did a good job.

Steyn provided the opening breakthrough when Shikhar Dhawan (0), attempting a mighty drive, failed to keep it down and JP Duminy at point latched on to the catch. Virat Kohli too fell for a duck, nicking Tsotsobe to the keeper before the left-arm seamer cut-short Rohit Sharma's (19) stay - the right-hander could not execute a pull shot properly and found Amla at mid-wicket. Ajinkya Rahane did not stay for long either, edging Morkel to keeper de Kock to head back on 8.

Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni tried to reserruct the innings with a watchful partnership. However, their efforts did not count for much as they fell in quick succession. de Kock pulled off a superb catch off Vernon Philander's bowling which resulted in the dismissal of Dhoni (19) while Raina (36) failed to keep a drive down to give David Miller a catch and Morkel his second wicket.

R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja tried to keep India afloat, but Steyn came along and dismissed any notions of an Indian fight-back by getting rid of Ashwin. Tsotsobe then picked up his third wicket when AB de Villiers held on to a fine catch at long on which resulted in the dismissal of Jadeja (26). Umesh Yadav became Steyn's third scalp before Tsotsobe finished things off by cleaning up Mohammed Shami to help South Africa take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match series.

Earlier, de Kock scored his second consecutive ton and was involved in a superb stand with Hashim Amla before India fought back with wickets in the latter overs to restrict South Africa to a total below 300. de Kock and Amla put on 194 runs for the opening wicket - the best partnership for South Africa against India at home - before Mohammed Shami picked up three wickets to keep the hosts from getting to a big total.

The left-hander, who turns 21 on December 17, got his runs at a steady rate and received good support from Amla as they got the Proteas off to a positive start. While they weren't as belligerent as they were in the previous game, they did manage to keep the scoring rate hovering close to the 6-an-over mark while minimising the risks. The left-handed opener was the first to get to his fifty before the first-wicket pair raised a century partnership for the second time in a row.

Amla, who also got past fifty, entered the record books by becoming the fastest to 4000 runs in ODI cricket. With a single of R Ashwin in the 26th over, Amla, who moved to 58, got to the 4000 mark in his 81st innings, 7 innings quicker than Viv Richards. de Kock, meanwhile made a steady approach towards the three-figure mark and got there with a single off Ishant Sharma in the 34th over.

The pair looked set to get to a double century stand but failed to do that as Ashwin ended the partnership by accounting for de Kock in the 36th over. In the very next over, de Villiers, who had produced a whirlwind knock in the 1st ODI, fell cheaply as he was out stumped off Ravindra Jadeja. A few overs later, Amla got to his 12th ODI century, before Shami struck twice in an over to dismiss the right-handed opener and send back David Miller (0) as well. Following that, JP Duminy was run-out while Jacques Kallis was castled by Shami as India pulled things back. However, they could not stop Ryan McLaren and Philander from plundering runs in the final over, which helped South Africa finish with a more than respectable total.

It was a slower track in Durban when compared to the Johannesburg pitch on which India gave away 206 runs in the last 20 overs. They bowlers though did a much tidier job in this game, conceding only 86 runs in the last 14 overs, which included 20 off the final over bowled by Umesh Yadav. South Africa made one change - Vernon Philander, who missed the first match because of a shoulder injury, replaced Wayne Parnell - while there were three changes in the Indian team. Yuvraj Singh was not fit and was replaced by Ajinkya Rahane while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohit Sharma made way for Ishant Sharma and Yadav. Neither of these two bowlers picked up any wickets though and while Ishant gave away 38 runs in the 7 overs that he bowled, Yadav conceded 45 off his 6 overs.

There was a delayed start to the the match due to a wet outfield and was reduced to a 49-overs-per-side affair. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni had the luck of the coin going his way again and he chose to insert South Africa in this time as well. The players, who wore black armbands, along with the crowd observed a minute's silence before the start of the game, in memory of former South African President Nelson Mandela, who passed away three days back. Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane, the former Archbishop of Cape Town, said a prayer before the singing of the national anthems.
