Apple reveals iPad Air, new mini

    Michelle Clancy | 23-10-2013

Apple has unveiled a lighter, thinner version of the iPad, dubbed the iPad Air, along with a new iPad mini and a host of Macs, all perfect for video streaming.
iPad Air is 20% thinner and 28% lighter than the fourth generation iPad: it weighs 1lb, compared with 1.4lbs for the previous version. It sports a narrower bezel so that the borders of iPad Air are much thinner — making content more immersive. It's also a full eight times faster than the 2010 original.
iPad Air also has up to nine hours of battery life, which Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller pointed out is enough to "watch the entire trilogy of The Black Knight on one charge."
iPad Air goes on sale 1 November, and is the most expensive iPad to date, starting at $499.
Meanwhile Apple has updated the iPad mini with Retina display, bringing all the pixels from the 9.7" iPad to its 7.9" screen. It will start at $399 when it launches in November, and will be available in silver or 'space grey'.
"iPad created an entirely new mobile computing experience, and the new iPad Air is another big leap ahead. It is so thin, light and powerful, once you hold one in your hand you will understand what a tremendous advancement this is," said Schiller. "iPad Air with its 9.7" retina display weighs just 1lb and packs the incredible performance of iOS 7 running on a 64-bit desktop-class Apple A7 chip, and delivers all-day battery life in the lightest full-sized tablet in the world."
The company also took the wraps off a $1,299, 13" MacBook Pro with Retina display. The 15" MacBook Pro has a new price tag: $1,999, compared with $2,199 previously. And Apple announced the Mac Pro, a luxury desktop computer for 'power users', which will be available in December for $2,999.
