SIS selects ATEME codecs for newsgathering fleet

Europe's largest operator of satellite newsgathering (SNG) vehicles, SIS LIVE, has made a major investment in video compression solutions from ATEME.
SIS LIVE operates the largest fleet of mobile satellite uplink vehicles in Europe, and since its first live non-sport broadcast in 1989 has been active in the uplink and SNG markets. The company now has a fleet of approximately 128 uplink trucks and additional flyaway units covering over 100,000 hours of satellite links each year for worldwide events. It has contracts in place with broadcasters such as BBC, ITN, ITV, Sky News and Sky Sports News, delivering about four-fifths of the UK's live news contribution feeds and offers service, offering service levels in excess of 99.8% uplink availability.
ATEME encoding solutions are already deployed widely for live broadcast contribution links, full-time distribution services, non-linear file and live video streaming solutions for OTT, IPTV and VOD applications.
In this news deal its Kyrion CM5000 encoders and decoders will see use equipping SIS's 18 new Ka band vehicles with the latest compression technology for news and content provision with ITN and ITV.
The product line was said to have been chosen for its state-of-the-art built-in modulation and its ability to save space in vehicles compared with external modulators, also allowing operators to reduce roll-off factors. This mode of satellite modulation, also known as 'smaller guard intervals' will soon be standardised under DVB-S2x, maximising the effective bandwidth of satellite transponders.
